Chowara project to be commissioned by month-end

KOCHI: The villages in the Vypeen region, facing an interminable water scarcity, will get a succour when the Chowara Water Supply Scheme will be commissioned by the end of January.
The Chowara Scheme, with a capacity of 63 mld (million litres per day) of water, is nearing completion fast in spite of minor delays, according to V.D. Satheesan, MLA. The scheme was slated to be commissioned by the end of December, 2005 and the trial run was expected to have started by December 15, 2005. However, the unexpected rains in October and November, coupled with a lockout in the Kolkata factory from where the pipes for the remaining length of the project were to be purchased, caused a delay of about 50 days.
Mr. Satheesan claims that the work has progressed in record speed, unlike any other recent project of the Kerala Water Authority (KWA). The work had started in April, 2003.
The implementing agency is the Kerala State Construction Corporation. The project is being executed under the Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management System.
The lockout in the Kolkata-based Electrosteel Castings, during November - December, had interrupted the supply of the pipes. However, the supply was resumed by mid-December and the laying of the pipes for the remaining stretch had started from December 20. Already, 1,500 metres of pipes have arrived, but 4,000 m are yet to arrive. Two or three loads of pipes are arriving daily. The work is progressing as per the arrival of the pipes and before January 20, laying of the pipes is expected to be complete. The trial run is expected to start in the last week of January. The pipelines will have to be cleared of all debris and waste by pumping water continuously for a couple of days before commencing the supply of purified water.
The work on the 11 KV electric sub-station at Chowara is also nearing completion. The electric work alone for this project costs Rs1.66 crores. The entire project costs around Rs.60 crores.
