KOCHI: Arrangements for the second phase of the coming Assembly elections to be held on April 29 are entering the final stage in the district.

P.C. Kapoor, the State Election Observer for Tamil Nadu and Kerala visited the district on Sunday for reviewing the arrangements, said District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, who is the District Election Officer.

The State Observer met the Election Observers for the district, the Collector and the Superintendents of Police and made a general overview of the arrangements made here.

The Collector said that the postal ballots from the district are ready to be sent. The ballots would be despatched immediately.

A final session of training for the election officers who have not yet attended the training classes so far and those who are interested in getting more practice will be held at the Maharaja's College Centenary Auditorium on Monday morning. The classes will start at 10 a.m.

The setting of the electronic voting machines (EVMs) for all the 14 constituencies will be held at 14 centres on Tuesday and Wednesday, said the Collector. Political parties and the candidates have already been informed of the date and time for the different centres. The machines will be taken out of the safe custody with full police protection and will be sent back after setting it, under police protection.

The Collector said that the overall law and order position in the district so far has been absolutely normal. All the statutory formalities for the election procedure have been completed. The anti-defacement squads are functioning very well in the district.

Absence in the training classes for the polling personnel and disobedience to the instructions of the authorities are minimal this year.

But, in two cases, two persons to whom notices were sent for appearing for training as polling personnel have been missing, said the Collector. Both of them are lecturers at the Bharat Mata College, Thrikkakara. Both of them have informed the College Management that they are out of Kerala at present. One of them has informed that he would be in Dehra Dun till May 2.

Arrest warrants against these two persons have been issued and the police were searching for them.
