Auto, taxi strike total in district

KOCHI: The State-level indefinite strike launched by the autorikshaw and taxi car drivers was total in the district on Thursday.

The strike is being held under the joint action council of the trade unions, including CITU, AITUC, INTUC, BMS and STU, raising various demands. The demands include a hike in the auto and taxi fares taking into consideration the hike in the fuel price and the price of spare parts.

The unions are also demanding an increase in the welfare fund of the drivers and to withdraw the condition to install digital meters in autorikshaws. The striking drivers took out a march from the premises of the CPI Mandalam Committee office at Kaloor. The march concluded at High Court Junction. CITU leader K.A. Pushpakaran inaugurated the public meeting held after the march.
