New road from Kakkanad to Kothamangalam soon

KOCHI: A new two-lane road will be constructed from Kakkanad to Kothamangalam which will reduce the distance between these places by about 11 km.

The decision was taken at a meeting in Thiruvananthapuram, which was presided over by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.

This road will offer a shorter route from Kodaikkanal to Ernakulam via Top Station and Munnar. The road, which will be 27.32-km long, is estimated to cost around Rs.84 crores.

The road will pass through the undeveloped areas of Kanayannur, Kunnathunadu and Kothamangalam taluks. This will help in the development of the industrial and agricultural sector in Ernakulam district. The detailed pr oject report will be prepared soon. The emergency notification for the acquisition of land will also be issued immediately. The land acquisition for this project will be un dertaken with a view to expanding the road to four-lane in the future.

Public Works Minister M.K. Muneer, V.J. Paulose, MLA, Industries Department Principal secretary T. Balakrishnan, Finance Department Principal Secretary Jose Cyriac, Tourism Principal Secretary E.K. Bharath Bhushan, Public Works Principal Secretary Gyanesh Kumar and Ernakulam District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish were present.
