Strike hits functioning of offices

Striking employees take out a march to Civil Station

KOCHI: The one-day token strike called by the Left trade unions affected the functioning of Government offices in the district, with most remaining closed.

In the Civil Station at Kakkanad, 1,018 out of the 1,060 employees participated in the strike. In the Collectorate, 148 out of the 160 employees struck work. Only 12 people, including the District Collector, Additional District Magistrate and Deputy Collectors were present.

At the District Treasury, 74 out of the 75 employees took part in the strike. The strike was complete at the Principal Agricultural Officer's Office, Office of the Deputy Director of Education, Regional Transport Office, Labour Office, District Planning Office, SC/ST Development Office, Factories and Boilers Department, Ground Water Department and others. All these offices remained closed.

The striking employees took out a march in front of the Civil Station.

In the city, 1,250 out of the 1,753 Government employees in different offices participated in the strike. The striking employees took out a march to the Kanayannur Taluk Office.

Other offices including taluk offices and various courts too were affected by the strike. The passenger ferry services of the State Water Transport Department were also affected.

Three persons were arrested at Thrikkakara in connection with the strike.
