Nepathya
Kerala
A house for koodiyattom
'Nepathyam' means green room or 'aniyara' in Malayalam.
"It denotes the backstage, where all the real work for a performing art takes place," says Margi Madhu, well-known koodiyattom artiste.
The backstage is quite an important place for performing arts. What you see on stage is the completed product, finished to perfection with the meticulous work that has taken place backstage.
So, 'Nepathya' was chosen as the name of the performance space created by Madhu and his wife Indu G., a koodiyattom artiste herself, at Moozhikkulam.
Nepathya is located on the first floor of their house near Moozhikkulam Lakshmana Temple.
Though rather small, the space is well-equipped and suited for an intimate audience.
"Nepathya was started with a view to conducting classes in koodiyattom acting and percussion as well as for regular performances," says Madhu.
The classes started a couple of years back and the monthly programme a few months back. The formal inauguration was held last Sunday.
Parakkadavu panchayat president Jisha Sreedharan inaugurated the programme with Guru Moozhikkulam Kochukuttan Chakyar, veteran koodiyattom artiste and Madhu's father, lighting the traditional lamp.
After the meeting, the performance of 'Ugrasena Bandhanam' Nangiarkoothu was presented by Indu. Kalamandalam Ratheesh Bhas and Kalamandalam Anoop provided accompaniment on mizhavu with Harikrishnan on edakka and Krishnapriya on talam.
Monthly programmes
Madhu and Indu are now planning to conduct regular monthly programmes at Moozhikkulam, apart from the regular classes.
The classes are being held during mornings and evenings. Training is being given in koodiyattom acting as well as the performance of mizhavu.
One major project is the performance of the complete package of 'Manthrankam,' koodiyattom, with visual documentation.
Such performance spaces help in the preservation and evolution of classical art forms. More koodiyattom artistes are now thinking of creating their own spaces for training and performance.
