Renovation of collectorate nearing completion

KOCHI: The Ernakulam District Collectorate, which has been functioning at the Thrikkakara panchayat community hall for the last few months, will return to the renovated Civil Station at Kakkanad in the first week of July.

District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish said Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan was expected inaugurate the building. The date of inauguration would be decided later.


The renovation of the Collectorate premises was carried out under the Modernising Government Programme (MGP) of the State Government. The work began in January.

The District Planning Office would be the first to shift back to the renovated premises, by June 25. The Election Wing will follow. All modern facilities, including communication systems, would be installed by June 30.

A special meeting of the MGP held at the Collectorate on Monday assessed the progress of the work. All civil, electrical, electronic and interior designing works have been completed, with only some minor works remaining.

The offices, including Collector's Chamber, Enquiry counter, Postal Section, Establishment section, Additional District Magistrate's Office, Magisterial section, offices of the Deputy Collectors and the officers under them, Finance section, Record Room, Fair Copy section and Land Acquisition (National Highways) will now be housed on the renovated premises.

An area of 40,000 sq. ft. has been renovated at an expenditure of Rs.4.34 crores under the scheme.

A total number of 175 works stations have been set up. A conference hall with capacity of 250 persons, separate video conferencing hall and plush lobbies have been built. It also has a separate training centre for the staff and a data centre of the National Informatics Centre.
