Council to seek report from official
KOCHI: The Kochi Corporation will seek a report from the Corporation Secretary on the allegations relating to the purchase of bio-larvicide for mosquito eradication in the city.
Mayor Mercy Williams told a Council meeting on Saturday that the Corporation would also request the Government to conduct an inquiry in the issue.
Complaints had risen regarding the purchase of 5,000 litres of bio-larvicide at a cost of Rs.35 lakhs for mosquito eradication. There were allegations that the decision was taken before obtaining the permission of the Corporation Council or the Health Standing Committee.
Councillor A.B. Sabu, giving the details of the corruption charges, pointed out that out of the four firms which presented quotations for the bio-larvicide, the lowest rate was quoted by a Chennai-based firm Revathy Agencies. However, the contract was awarded to a firm whose quotation was the second lowest based on a statement given by its own representative that Revathy Agencies had not obtained the certification of the Central Insecticide Board.
A quantity of 5,000 litres of the larvicide was purchased, which is said to be in surplus of the demand in the Corporation.
Health Standing Committee chairperson K.J. Maxi refuted the charges. He pointed out that the allegations were part of attempts to malign the Corporation and the standing committee.
Role of officials
Senior member K.M. Hamsakunju said that the Health Standing Committee chairperson could not be held wholly responsible for the corruption charges as he was mislead by the Corporation officers.
Councillor Sabu George also alleged that such complaints were being raised against the Health Standing Committee purposefully.
