Rs.50 lakhs for renovating Government Law College

Building gets heritage status; phase one of works to be completed soon
KOCHI: A fund of Rs.50 lakhs has been allotted for the conservation and renovation of the building of Government Law College, Ernakulam, which had been declared a heritage building by the Government.
The first phase of the development activities at the college will be completed soon, with the renovation of the Men's Hostel and the construction of the Women's Hostel having already been completed, according to Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, chairman of the College Development Committee.
Work reviewed
The CDC, which met on Thursday, reviewed the renovation and construction works. The inauguration of the hostels is expected to take place in the last week of July or the first week of August.
The Education Minister and the Law Minister will participate, said the Collector.
The building will be renovated taking care to maintain its heritage status. Since top quality timber will have to be used for renovating the main structure, the CDC has requested the Government to allot the timber free of cost.
The old students of the college are also expected to pitch in for the developmental activities. The new classrooms, compound wall and gate of the college will be constructed preserving the basic characters of the heritage building.
Only the first floor of the Women's Hostel which is located on the campus has been completed.
The work of the second and third floors has been handed over to the Nirmithi Kendra.
Government Law College never had a women's hostel and the men's hostel, located in Market Road, had been lying in a dilapidated condition for a long time.
