Kerala
Vallarpadam rail-road work reviewed

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: A meeting of the committee in charge of establishing rail and road connectivity from the mainland to the International Container Transhipment Terminal at Vallarpadam was held on Thursday at the Collectorate.

The progress of the work was reviewed.

Environmental clearance
District Collector A.P.M. Mohammed Hanish, who presided over the meeting, said that a major constraint for the construction of the four-lane highway connecting Kalamassery with Vallarpadam was the obtaining of environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF).

A team of officials from the MoEF had recently inspected the project area.

The Cochin Port Trust will hand over the amount of Rs.30 crores needed to pay compensation to people whose land will be taken over.

The work of the railway line has been put on hold following the Government's directive to go slow on the alignment of the railway line, following complaints from local residents.

The fieldwork for land acquisition has been stopped according to the direction of the Revenue Minister. The Cochin Port Trust is of the opinion that the work should start immediately, whatever be the alignment.

Though the Railways have already called for tenders for the construction of the railway track via Vaduthala, they have been asked to go slow in deference to the directive of the State Government.

Further decisions will be taken after holding discussions with the Revenue Minister.

Port Trust chief engineer J.Karthikeyan, Railways Deputy Chief Engineer Radhakrishnan Nair, Rail Vikas Nigam Limited DGM Kesav Chandran and Deputy Collector (Land Acquisition) Remadevi participated in the meeting.
