DFID Scheme
Kerala - Kochi
Water scheme to be completed this month
Staff Reporter
KOCHI: The third zone of the DFID-assisted Water Supply Improvement Scheme for West Kochi, is expected to be completed by this month end or early next month.
Some of the interconnections of the pipeline along the Beach Road are remaining in the third zone, which is expected to be ready for commissioning by July end. The third zone covers four or five divisions of Fort Kochi, including the newly built water tank.
The incessant rain is posing problem for continuing the work as the area is heavily waterlogged, according to the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) sources. All the ditches dug by the authority this season tend to get filled with water immediately.
The laying of the main pipeline has been completed. About 50 small interconnections are yet to be completed. Once the interconnections are completed, water could be charged in the lines.
The project, assisted by the U.K. Department for International Development, is expected to provide an additional quantity of 5 MLD (million litres per day) of water to West Kochi by reducing the loss of water supply and improving the existing distribution system. The project costs Rs.17 crores.
The work of the second and fourth zone of the DFID-scheme is being delayed due to a Vigilance inquiry into the project pending at the Vigilance Court, Thrissur. As all the documents relating to the works are under the possession of the court, the work cannot be taken forward, KWA sources said. The KWA has sought the court permission to get the copies of the relevant documents needed for continuing the work.
